Ondo Assembly calls for regulation of coaching centres

During a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Chief Olamide Oladiji, it was informed the House  received a petition from the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Ondo State Chapter, regarding the recent hike in remittances to the government, particularly the registration fees for external candidates taking the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams. Ondo Assembly urges peaceful resolution of land disputes

By Temi Oguntoyinbo  In its continued efforts to resolve land disputes across Ondo State, the State House of Assembly has appealed to aggrieved parties to sheath their swords and allow the legislative body to reach a resolution that will provide lasting solutions to land-related crises in the state. Speaking during a hearing of the ad-hoc committee on public petitions and fraudulent activities related to land disputes, the committee chairman,  Ololade Gbegudu, stated that the committee was set up to maintain law and order.  Gbegudu emphasised that the Assembly would not permit the wanton disruption of lives and properties due to misunderstandings over land ownership. Ondo Assembly begin hearing on land disputes

By Josephine Oguntoyinbo The Ondo State House of Assembly Ad-Hoc Committee on Public Petitions and Fraudulent Activities Related to Land Disputes has commenced an investigation into the 10 petitions received following the passage of the Anti-land grabbing bill by the House in December 2024. At today’s sitting, the Chairman of the Committee, Ololade Gbegudu, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, stated that the committee, set up by the Speaker of the House, Chief Olamide Oladiji, was established to mediate and investigate the issues and find a lasting solution to this growing menace. Gbegudu also noted that the House would work with the executive arm to ensure the law is fully gazetted and enforced. Ondo Assembly launches probe into land grabbing cases

In response to numerous petitions regarding land grabbing and the illegal occupation of landed property, the Ondo State House of Assembly has constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the issue and find a lasting solution to this growing menace. Addressing journalists on the development, the Chairman of the Committee and lawmaker representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, Gbegudu Ololade James, stated that the decision aligns with Section 103(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). He emphasised that the House is committed to discouraging violence and fraudulent activities related to land disputes, ensuring a safe and lawful environment for residents of Ondo State. Ondo Assembly condemns violation of land laws, calls for swift justice

The Ondo State House of Assembly has condemned the persistent violation of the law prohibiting forceful entry, illegal occupation of landed properties, and fraudulent activities related to land in the state.  The lawmakers expressed concern over the increasing involvement of miscreants in such acts. During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Chief Olamide Oladiji, the House passed a resolution urging the Ministry of Justice to expedite the gazetting of the law to ensure its effective implementation by relevant authorities. The Speaker recalled that on 24th December 2024, the House passed the bill, which was swiftly assented to by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on 31st December of the same year.  However, he lamented that despite the enactment of the law, criminal activities related to land grabbing have escalated at an alarming rate. Yiaga Africa backs Tinubu’s call for RECs dismissal over gross misconduct

Election monitoring organisation, Yiaga Africa, has expressed support for President Tinubu’s request to the Nigerian Senate for the removal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for Adamawa, Abia, and Sokoto states on grounds of gross misconduct. The request follows the suspension of the RECs by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in March 2023, after their involvement in actions that compromised the neutrality and integrity of the commission. The Adamawa REC, Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari, unlawfully usurped the Returning Officer’s role during the Adamawa State governorship election by declaring false results. Meanwhile, the Sokoto REC, Dr Nura Ali, and the Abia REC, Mr Ike Uzochukwu, were suspended for dereliction of duty. Notably, the Sokoto REC is currently under prosecution by the Federal Government for alleged bribery and corruption related to the 2023 elections.
