Methodist Church Urges Tinubu to Tackle Soaring Food Prices, Insecurity
......Calls for intensified support for SMEs, youth empowerment, and stronger church-state collaboration
The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Lagos Mainland, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the escalating cost of food and worsening economic hardship impacting millions of Nigerians.
Rising from its 31st Annual Synod held at the Imota Circuit, the church, under the leadership of The Most Rev. Obafemi Adeleye and Diocesan Lay President, Sir Olusola Adu, urged the Federal Government to stabilise food prices, boost local food production, and enhance support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to cushion the effects of the current economic strain.
While acknowledging the bold economic reforms under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Diocese expressed grave concern over the persistent insecurity plaguing various parts of the country.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the synod, the Diocese advocated for intensified intelligence-driven security operations, improved community policing, and justice for victims of violence and unrest.
The synod, themed “He Will Rise Again,” encouraged Christians to place unwavering trust in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, urging the faithful to remain focused on the future and committed to God's work rather than dwelling on past setbacks.
The Diocese also emphasized youth development as a crucial investment for the future of both the church and the nation. It called for increased collaboration between the church, Lagos State Government, and relevant agencies to empower young people through accessible training and mentorship opportunities.
Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for notable strides in healthcare, education, transportation, and infrastructure, the church stressed the need for greater action in tackling environmental degradation, supporting vulnerable populations through welfare programmes, and fostering public-private partnerships for sustainable development and job creation.
The communiqué concluded with a reaffirmation of the church’s dedication to spiritual growth, social responsibility, and national transformation.
