Ondo Ministry of Justice Opens Applications For Prestigious Justice of the Peace Title



 Qualified and reputable members of the public  in Ondo State can now apply for Justice of the Peace (JP)  following the approval of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.


The Ondo State Ministry of Justice has announced the commencement of a fresh appointment process for the conferment of the JP title on qualified individuals of the State, marking the first of  such exercise in nearly 20 years.

The Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General of the Ministry, Mrs Olufunmilayo  Adejumo, disclosed this development, stating that the Governor had graciously approved the request by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, OON,SAN, to begin the process.

According to Adejumo, the Justice of the Peace (JP) is a public office granted to individuals of proven integrity, charged with promoting peace and justice at the grassroots level.

“JPs are empowered to perform both judicial and administrative duties.They can settle minor disputes within communities, conduct investigations, and even liaise with the police to issue warrants of arrest when necessary.

“Administratively, they can witness signatures on official documents, administer oaths of office, and in some jurisdictions, even officiate marriages.”

She noted that the JP title is honorary and may be appended to names similarly to professional designations. “You don’t have to be a lawyer,a teacher, engineer, nurse,  any responsible member of society can apply, provided they meet the criteria.”

The Ministry outlined the following eligibility criteria for applicants: Must be at least 50 years old ,must not be an ex-convict,must be of sound mind and stable temperament,must demonstrate impeccable character and integrity,must show commitment to community service and engagement,must have utmost respect for the rule of law,must possess good communication skills, and must have at least basic educational qualifications.

The Ministry added that Non-indigenes must show proof of at least three years  tax payment in Ondo State.

"Application forms are available at the Ministry of Justice between 9 a.m. and 4pm . on working days, at a cost of N25,000,(non-refundable)payable into the State’s designated account.

"Prospective applicants are to submit their CVs along with the completed forms. The submitted dossiers will be screened by the State Security Service (SSS), and successful candidates will be invited to a decoration ceremony to be conducted by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice". 

Describing the development as commendable, the Ministry noted that the last known round of JP appointments in the State was nearly two decades ago."This is a move to revitalise community justice and bring the legal system closer to the people,”

 The Ministry stated that the application process is now officially open.
