Ondo Govt, Save the Children build capacity for child rights enforcement
The Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with Save the Children International, has commenced a three-day capacity building workshop aimed at strengthening the implementation of child rights policies and frameworks in the state.
The programme, holding from Wednesday, 13th to Friday, 15th August 2025 at Ondo West Local Government Area, brings together members of the State Child Rights Implementation Committee (SCRIC), relevant government ministries, and civil society organisations to deliberate on child rights, child labour laws, protection, and remediation programmes.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Oluwaseun Osamaye, charged participants to treat their roles with utmost objectivity, diligence, and dedication, noting that their work would go down in history as part of efforts to safeguard the welfare of children.
She cautioned against seeing the workshop as a mere official outing, stressing that decisions taken would influence policies for generations yet unborn. “Every recommendation from this meeting must be something you would be proud to implement for your own children,” she said.
Dr. Osamaye highlighted that Ondo State is considered one of the safest places for children in Nigeria, with relatively low cases of child trafficking and harmful traditional practices.
She, however, warned against complacency, calling on all ministries and agencies to speak out against any form of violence or abuse against children. “Harmful practices should be completely eradicated. We must remain vigilant,” she added.
The commissioner praised the prevailing cultural norm in Ondo State where families prefer to personally care for their children rather than send them out as domestic help,a practice common in some other states.
She emphasised that child rights include safety, education, and welfare, and that ignorance of these rights is no excuse before the law. She urged continuous sensitisation of parents and guardians to respect the legal and moral rights of children.
Programme Coordinator, Mr. Eyimofe Omede, explained that the workshop is designed to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in line with national and international standards for promoting and protecting children’s rights.
"The training, fully supported by Save the Children, will see Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) present their progress, challenges, and strategies for advancing child rights in their areas of responsibility".
Resource persons covered topics such as:Principles of child protection case management, overview of the Child Rights Law 2007,SCRIC’s role in implementation.
Stakeholders are expected to harmonise opinions, strengthen implementation plans, and develop a work plan to guide actions for child protection in the state.
The Speaker of the Ondo State Children’s Parliament ,Olamide Poroye commended the organisers, noting that the workshop is “truly for the protection and future of children.”
In separate interviews, participants pledged to work towards stronger child protection measures and to ensure that every child in Ondo State is given the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
